Most calls start the same way: something has stopped draining and it is not clearing on its own. Left alone it gets worse, and in heavy rain a blocked run floods instead of carrying water away.
Water pooling around an outside gully, an unpleasant smell near a drain cover, a sink that empties slowly, or a toilet that gurgles when the bath runs away. These nearly all show up before anything overflows.
Grease is the usual culprit in home drains. Fat, food waste and coffee grounds coat the inside of the pipe until a slow-draining sink is the first thing anyone notices, and by then the build-up runs well past the trap.
A toilet that will not clear normally means the blockage sits further down the soil stack rather than in the pan. Wipes and sanitary items are behind a fair share of them, and toilet unblocking is one of the more urgent calls we take.
Older pipework across Sutton-in-Ashfield was laid in clay. Joints shift over time and roots follow the damp into the gaps, while hard water leaves scale and mineral deposits narrowing the bore. A drain that blocks every few months is telling you about the pipe itself, not about what went down it.
Clearing a drain properly means removing what is blocking it, not shunting the blockage along the pipe so it comes straight back. Drain jetting does that, and where the cause is not obvious we follow it with a camera.
A high pressure water jet strips grease, roots, silt and mineral deposits off the inside of the pipe, rather than a rod that can push a blockage along without shifting it. Drain jetting uses water alone, with no chemicals going into the ground, and it works on everything from home drains to wider drainage runs. Our vans carry the parts most jobs need, so straightforward drain unblocking usually finishes on the first visit.
If a drain keeps blocking we run a CCTV drain survey down the line. CCTV drain surveys show collapses, displaced joints and root damage that no hand tool will find, and a drain inspection on camera tells you what you are actually paying to fix.
Where the problem sits out in the drain network rather than close to the house, we work the run back until we find it. For drain tracing and locating we use a sonde to establish route and depth, and we can draw the layout up as a plan for your records. Sewer clearance on a shared run is a different job from clearing a single gully, and we will tell you which one you have got before quoting.

Not every blocked drain is yours to pay for. Inside your property boundary the pipework is a private drain and clearing it is down to you. Once it passes the boundary and joins the public sewer, it is Severn Trent's pipe and Severn Trent's job to clear.
Knowing which side of that line a blockage sits on is the hard part before anyone has looked. We can tell you where the problem is, and if it turns out to be Severn Trent's, point you to who is responsible for a blocked drain rather than charging you for a pipe that was never your responsibility.
The same drainage systems turn up in a terrace and in a trade counter, but the pressure to get them working again is different. We cover both across Sutton in Ashfield.
Domestic drainage is most of what we do: blocked sinks, blocked toilets, gullies and the run out to the boundary. Drain cleaning on a domestic job is usually a single visit.
Blocked drains stop a business trading. Commercial kitchens block more often than anything else we attend, because fat and food waste go down the sink all day. For commercial clients we also bring thermal imaging and acoustic leak detection when the job turns out to be a leak rather than a blockage.
Where a drain network blocks predictably, regular maintenance costs less than repeated emergencies. We run planned maintenance contracts on both high and low level work, so the drains get checked to a schedule instead of only after something has gone wrong.

Some drainage problems come back because the pipe itself has failed - a cracked joint, root damage, or a section that has partly collapsed. Where the run can be repaired without digging up a drive or a garden, we use drain relining, which forms a new lining inside the existing pipe and typically lasts around 50 years.
Where relining is not the right answer we carry out a direct repair instead, and you can read more about how we approach drain repairs. Either way the work is priced on the phone before anyone sets off.
A drain that floods a kitchen, backs up into a bathroom, or leaves a business without a working toilet will not wait for a routine appointment. We aim to reach you within the hour on emergency drain unblocking, though how fast we get there depends on what is already booked that day.
If you need emergency cover overnight or at a weekend, say so when you ring and we will tell you straight away what we can do. We also take emergency plumbing calls alongside the drainage work, which depends on contractor availability, so ask when you call rather than assuming either way.

Don't just take our word for it - our customers rave about our services! Here's what some of our satisfied customers have to say:

We are a Nottinghamshire drainage firm working out of Hucknall, so Sutton-in-Ashfield is ground we cover every week rather than a trip out. Alongside it we cover drainage in Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Hucknall and drain unblocking in Mansfield, and we take calls from Huthwaite, Skegby, Stanton Hill, Teversal and Sutton Junction.
Being close by is the practical difference: shorter travel on an emergency, no premium for the distance, and engineers who already know the drain network across Ashfield.
Every engineer we send is fully trained, insured and DBS checked, which is worth knowing before you let anyone through the door.
We work across Nottingham, Nottinghamshire and into Derbyshire. Browse the areas below for drainage services near you, or call us and we will tell you straight away whether we cover your postcode.
We do not publish a price list, because clearing a drain has to be priced against what is actually in the pipe. We ask a few questions on the phone and give you a fixed price from your answers, and that price does not move once you have agreed it. Quoting is free and there are no call out fees to come and look, anywhere in Sutton in Ashfield. That is most of what customer service means on a drainage job: you know the number before we start.
We work out of Hucknall and aim to be with you within the hour on an emergency. We will tell you honestly on the phone how soon we can get there rather than promising a slot we cannot make.
It depends where the blockage is. Inside your boundary the drain is private and the cost is yours; past the boundary it becomes a public sewer and Severn Trent's responsibility. If you are not sure, we can establish which side it sits on before any work starts.
Yes, when the pressure is matched to the pipe. We look at what the run is made of before we start, and where a pipe is already damaged a CCTV drain survey comes first so we are not jetting a collapse.
Repeat blockages usually point at the pipe rather than at what went down it - root damage, a displaced joint, scale and mineral deposits, or a partial collapse. A camera survey shows which, and once you know that you can fix the cause instead of paying to clear the same drain every few months.
No. Quoting is free and there are no call out fees to come and look. We give you a fixed price over the phone once we know what the job involves, and the figure you are given is the figure you pay. Call 0115 990 2882 to book.
