Most calls start the same way: something has stopped draining and it is not clearing on its own. Left alone it gets worse, and in heavy rain a blocked run floods instead of carrying water away.
Water pooling around an outside gully, unpleasant odours near a drain cover, a blocked sink that empties slowly, or a toilet that gurgles when the bath runs away - those are the common signs of blocked drains, and they nearly all show up before anything overflows. Blocked gutters make it worse, so guttering is worth clearing before autumn.
Grease build-up is the usual culprit. Fat, food waste and coffee grounds coat the inside of the pipe until a slow-draining sink is the first thing anyone notices. By the time the water stops going down altogether, the build-up runs well past the trap, and that is a sink unblocking job rather than something a plunger will fix.
A toilet that gurgles, drains slowly or will not clear at all normally means the blockage sits further down the soil stack rather than in the pan. Blocked toilets are among the more urgent calls we take, because the property often has no working toilet until it is sorted.
Plenty of housing around Arnold was built when clay pipe was standard. Clay joints shift over time, and tree root ingress follows the damp into the gaps. A drain with recurring problems, blocking every few months rather than once, is telling you something about the pipe itself and not about what went down it.
Clearing a drain properly means removing what is blocking it, not shunting the blockage further along the pipe so it comes straight back in a fortnight. Our drain unblocking techniques start with high-pressure drain jetting, and where the cause is not obvious we follow it with a camera. That is proper drain unblocking rather than a quick prod with a rod, and our unblocking services run from a single blocked sink through to a full drain run.
Drain jetting strips grease, silt, scale and root growth off the inside of the pipe with a controlled jet of water. It works on domestic waste pipes and on larger drain runs, and it is where we start on most Arnold callouts. Our vans carry the parts most jobs need, so a straightforward drain clearance usually gets finished on the first visit.
If a drain keeps blocking, or we cannot see why it blocked in the first place, we run a CCTV drain survey down the line. CCTV surveys show collapses, displaced joints and root damage that no hand tool will find, and a drain inspection on camera tells you what you are actually paying to fix. For drain tracing we use a sonde to establish the route and depth of the run, and we can draw the layout up as a plan for your records.

Not every blocked drain is yours to pay for. Inside your property boundary the pipework is a private drain and clearing it is down to you, and that covers the external drains and gullies around the house as well as everything indoors. Once the drain passes the boundary and joins the public sewer, it is Severn Trent's pipe and Severn Trent's job to clear.
Knowing which side of that line a blockage sits on is the hard part before anyone has looked. We can tell you where the problem is, and if it turns out to be Severn Trent's, point you to who is responsible for a blocked drain rather than charging you for a pipe that was never your responsibility.
Some drainage problems come back because the pipe itself has failed - a cracked joint, root damage, or a section that has partly collapsed. Where the run can be repaired without digging up a drive or a garden, we use drain relining, which forms a new lining inside the existing pipe.
Where relining is not the right answer we carry out direct pipe repairs instead, and you can read more about how we approach drain repairs. Either way the work is priced on the phone before anyone sets off.

A drain that floods a kitchen, backs up into a bathroom, or leaves a business without a working toilet will not wait for a routine appointment. Our emergency drain services cover exactly that, and we aim to reach you within the hour. Arnold is close to our base, which helps on emergency call outs, though how fast we get there depends on what is already booked that day. If you need emergency drain clearance overnight or at a weekend, say so when you ring and we will tell you straight away what we can do.
Blocked drains stop a business trading, and a cafe or a shop cannot lose a day waiting for a slot. We work with shops, offices, pubs, restaurants and industrial units across Arnold and Gedling, using the same drain cleaning and unblocking work as on domestic jobs, plus thermal imaging and acoustic leak detection where the problem is a leak rather than a blockage. We also run planned preventative maintenance contracts, so a commercial drainage system gets checked to a schedule instead of only after something has gone wrong. Ask about commercial drainage when you call.

Don't just take our word for it - our customers rave about our services! Here's what some of our satisfied customers have to say:

We are a Nottinghamshire drainage company working out of Hucknall, roughly four miles from Arnold, so Arnold drainage work is ground we cover every week rather than a trip out. Alongside Arnold we cover drainage in Hucknall and drain unblocking across Nottingham, and we take calls from Daybrook, Woodthorpe, Redhill, Bestwood, Carlton and Calverton in the surrounding areas.
Being close by is the practical difference: shorter travel on an emergency call, no premium for the distance, and a drainage engineer who already knows the ground around Gedling. For local drainage services, that proximity is most of the value.
Whoever turns up, the engineer at your door is fully trained, insured and DBS checked. On a domestic job that matters as much as the kit in the van.
We work across Nottingham, Nottinghamshire and into Derbyshire. Browse the areas below for drainage services near you, or call us and we will tell you straight away whether we cover your postcode.
We do not publish a price list, because clearing a drain has to be priced against what is actually in the pipe. Our blocked drain services are all quoted the same way: we ask a few questions on the phone and give you a fixed price from your answers, and that price does not move once you have agreed it. Quoting is free, and there is no call out charge just for us to come and look.
We are based in Hucknall, about four miles away, and we aim to be with you within the hour on an emergency. We will tell you honestly on the phone how soon we can get there rather than promising a slot we cannot make.
It depends where the blockage is. Inside your boundary the drain is private and the cost is yours; past the boundary it becomes a public sewer and Severn Trent's responsibility. If you are not sure, we can establish which side it sits on before any work starts.
Recurring problems usually point at the pipe rather than at what went down it - tree root ingress, a displaced joint or a partial collapse. A CCTV drain survey shows what is going on, and once you know that you can fix the cause instead of paying to clear the same drain every few months.
We quote a fixed price over the phone once we know what the job involves, and quoting costs nothing. The figure you are given is the figure you pay. Call 0115 990 2882 to book.
