What Drain Relining Is and When It Works

Relining is trenchless technology: the repair happens from an existing access point, so the ground above the pipe is never opened. It suits cracked pipes, open joints, root ingress and corroded runs, which between them account for most of the drainage issues we are called out to. It cannot fix a drain that has fully collapsed or one laid to the wrong fall, and we will tell you if that is what the survey shows.

How the liner goes in

We clear and jet the run first, then survey it on camera so the defect and its position are recorded. A resin-saturated liner is drawn through the damaged length, inflated against the pipe wall and left to cure. A final CCTV survey confirms the finished bore, and you get the footage. Both CCTV surveys are graded to WRc classification, so our WRc reports show the before and after side by side.

How long it lasts

A full liner has a design life of around 50 years, which is why it is treated as a permanent drainage solution rather than a patch-up. The liner is smooth-bored, so the relined section usually flows better than the original clay or concrete did.

Relining compared with digging. Excavation means breaking out the surface, replacing the pipe and reinstating everything above it. On a drive or under a conservatory that is the expensive part, not the pipe. Relining avoids it entirely, and there is no waste removal to pay for beyond what comes out of the jetting.

Types of Lining We Offer

Full-length relining

A complete new pipe inside the old one, end to end. Sewer lining on private sewers works the same way. This is the right answer where a run has several defects along its length, or where an older clay drainage system is deteriorating generally rather than failing at one point.

Localised repairs

Where the damage sits in one place, there is no reason to line the whole run. These are the drain lining solutions we use most on domestic drain repair work.

Patch lining

A short liner over a single crack or displaced joint, cured in place like a full liner but covering only the defect. Fast, and the cheapest of the lining options.

Epoxy patch repairs

Epoxy resin patch repairs seal localised damage and restore the bore where a section has corroded rather than cracked.

Cured in place pipe for cast iron

Cast iron drains corrode from the inside. CIPP lining, or cured in place pipe, restores the bore and gives the corrosion something to stop against, which avoids replacing pipework that is otherwise sound.

Drain Relining Nottingham: Get a Free Quote

We do not publish lining rates, because the price depends on the length, the diameter and the access. What we do is survey the drain, then quote a fixed price on the phone and hold it. We line drains across Nottingham most weeks. Free estimates, no call-out charge.

If the survey shows relining is the wrong answer, we will say so rather than sell you a liner that will not hold.

Drainage Services Across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire

We are drainage experts and drainage specialists covering Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, including Arnold, Hucknall, Mansfield, Kirkby-in-Ashfield and Sutton-in-Ashfield, and into Derbyshire at Derby, Ilkeston and Heanor. Domestic drain services and commercial drains are handled by the same drain repair engineers.

Alongside lining we cover drain repairs and sewer repairs, drain unblocking and blocked drains, drain cleaning and commercial drain cleaning, CCTV drain surveys and drain tracing, drain installation and drain connections, maintenance, gully emptying and tanker services. Waste removal is covered by transfer notes. Whatever the fault, we would rather give you drainage solutions that last than come back to the same pipe next year.

Where a defect turns out to sit on the public sewer network rather than your own drainage and sewers, we will tell you - most shared drains beyond your boundary became Severn Trent's responsibility in 2011, so those drainage works are not yours to pay for.

Frequently asked questions

How long does drain relining take?

Most jobs are finished in a day, including the survey before and after. A patch repair is usually a few hours.

Does relining reduce the pipe diameter?

Very slightly, but the liner is smooth-bored where the original was not, so flow is normally as good or better than before.

Can you reline a collapsed drain?

No. A liner needs a host pipe to cure against. Where a run has collapsed we excavate and replace that section, and can line either side of it.

How soon can I use the drain again?

Once the liner has cured and we have run the final CCTV survey, usually the same day.
