Blocked kitchen sink backing up before clearing

What causes blocked drains in Heanor

Blocked drains almost always come down to one of four things. Knowing which one you have got decides whether the job is a twenty minute clear or a repair, so it is the first thing our drainage engineers work out.

The four we find most often

Grease and food waste

Fat and food waste coat the inside of the pipe until the bore narrows and water flow slows to nothing. It is the most common cause of blocked drains in domestic kitchens, and the reason commercial kitchens block more than anything else we attend.

Tree roots

Tree roots find cracked joints in older clay pipework and grow into the drain looking for water. Much of the housing around Heanor was laid in clay, so tree roots are behind a good share of the repeat blockages we see.

Foreign objects

Wipes, cotton buds, sanitary items and the occasional toy. Foreign objects lodge at a bend and everything else builds up behind them.

A failed pipe

A cracked, displaced or partly collapsed section will keep catching debris however often it is cleared. An unpleasant smell that lingers after a clear is often the giveaway.

How we clear blocked drains in Heanor

Drain unblocking done properly means removing what is blocking the pipe, not pushing the blockage along so it comes straight back. Which method we use depends on what the drain blockage turns out to be.

Our drain unblocking methods

High pressure jetting

High pressure jetting strips grease, roots and silt off the pipe wall with water alone, restoring the full bore rather than punching a hole through the middle of the blockage. It is our first choice on most drain unblocking jobs and it uses no chemicals.

Drain rods

For a short run or a straightforward blockage close to the property, drain rods do the job quickly and cost less. We use whichever is right rather than defaulting to the bigger kit.

CCTV inspections

If a drain keeps blocking we put a camera down. CCTV inspections show collapses, displaced joints and root damage that no hand tool will find, and they tell you what you are actually paying to fix before any money is spent on it. That is what separates a lasting drain unblocking from a temporary one.

Blocked toilets, blocked baths and blocked showers

Blocked toilets are the calls we treat most urgently, because a property with one toilet has no working toilet until it is cleared. A toilet that gurgles or drains slowly usually means the blockage sits down the soil stack rather than in the pan, so plunging it rarely helps. Most blocked toilets clear on the first visit.

Blocked baths and blocked showers are a different problem. Hair and soap build up in the trap and the waste pipe, and the water flow drops off gradually rather than stopping all at once. Blocked baths in particular are easy to leave too long. Tell us which of these you are describing when you ring and we will know what to bring.

Blocked drains that flood a kitchen, back up into a bathroom, or leave a business without a working toilet cannot wait. We aim to be with you within the hour, and the fixed price we quote on the phone is the price you pay.

Blocked sewers and whose drain it is

A blocked sewer is a bigger job than a blocked gully, and it is not always yours to pay for. Inside your property boundary the pipework is a private drain and clearing it is down to you. Once it passes the boundary and joins the public sewer it becomes Severn Trent's pipe and their responsibility.

Where a blocked sewer serves several houses on a shared run, working out which property the blockage sits under matters before anyone starts. We can establish that, and if it turns out to be Severn Trent's, point you to who is responsible for a blocked drain rather than charging you for a pipe that was never yours.

Drain repair without excavation

When blocked drains keep coming back, the pipe itself has usually failed. The old answer was excavation: dig up the drive or the garden, cut out the bad section, backfill and make good. Excavation still has its place, but it is disruptive and it is rarely the cheapest route once reinstatement is counted.

No-dig technology avoids most of that. Drain relining forms a new lining inside the existing pipe through an existing access point, so a failed run can be repaired with no excavation at all. A relined pipe typically lasts around 50 years. Where no-dig technology is not suitable - a full collapse, or a run that has lost its shape - we will say so and quote the excavation properly rather than trying to reline something that cannot be relined.

We also carry out drain repair and new pipe installation where a run needs replacing outright, and every drain repair is priced before anyone starts digging.

Emergency drain unblocking in Heanor

Blocked drains that flood a kitchen, back up into a bathroom, or leave a business without a working toilet will not wait for a routine appointment. We treat those as emergency drainage and aim to reach you within the hour, though a quick response time depends on where in Heanor you are and what is already booked that day. We will give you an honest answer on the phone rather than a slot we cannot make.

If you need emergency drain unblocking overnight or at a weekend, say so when you ring and we will tell you straight away what we can do. Emergency plumbing alongside the drainage work depends on contractor availability, so ask rather than assuming either way.

Don't just take our word for it - our customers rave about our services! Here's what some of our satisfied customers have to say:

Commercial drain unblocking

Blocked drains stop a business trading. Commercial drain unblocking is the same work as domestic on a bigger drainage system and a tighter clock, and we cover shops, offices, pubs, restaurants and industrial units across Heanor and the Amber Valley.

Commercial kitchens are the ones that block most, because fat and food waste go down the sink all day. Where a leak rather than a blockage is the problem we bring thermal imaging and acoustic leak detection. For managed sites we also run planned drain maintenance contracts, so the drains get checked to a schedule instead of only after something has already gone wrong. Ask about commercial drainage when you call and we will talk through what a contract would cover.

Keeping a drainage system clear

Most blocked drains are avoidable, and the preventive advice is dull but it works: keep fat out of the sink, keep wipes out of the toilet, and clear the gully grate of leaves before autumn rain arrives. A drainage system that has blocked once will usually block again unless something changed, so it is worth knowing why it went.

Where a run blocks predictably, scheduled drain cleaning costs less than repeated emergencies and heads off the blocked drains before they happen. Our drain maintenance plans cover both high and low level work and are already running on commercial contracts.

Where we cover around Heanor

We are a Nottinghamshire drainage firm working out of Hucknall, and Heanor sits on the Derbyshire side of ground we already cover. We would rather say plainly where we set off from, because it is a fair thing to ask.

Alongside Heanor we cover drainage in Ilkeston and blocked drains in Derby, and we take calls from Langley Mill, Loscoe, Codnor, Marlpool, Aldercar and Shipley. It means a slightly longer run than a firm inside the town, and against that you get a fixed price agreed before we set off and drainage engineers who know the area.

The engineers who come out are fully trained, insured and DBS checked, so you know who you are letting onto the property.

Areas We Provide Drainage Services

We work across Nottingham, Nottinghamshire and into Derbyshire. Browse the areas below for drainage services near you, or call us and we will tell you straight away whether we cover your postcode.

What blocked drains in Heanor cost

We do not publish a price list, because clearing blocked drains has to be priced against what is actually in the pipe. What we do instead is ask a few questions on the phone and give you a fixed price from your answers. That figure does not move once you have agreed it, quoting is free, and there is no call out charge to come and look.

If a camera survey shows the job is a repair rather than a clear, our drainage engineers come back to you with a separate quote for that before any work starts.

Frequently asked questions

How quickly can you get to Heanor?

We work out of Hucknall and aim to be with you within the hour on an emergency. Heanor is a slightly longer run than our Nottinghamshire towns, so we will give you an honest time on the phone rather than a slot we cannot make.

Who pays to clear a blocked sewer, me or Severn Trent?

It depends where the blockage sits. Inside your boundary the drain is private and the cost is yours; past the boundary it becomes a public sewer and Severn Trent's responsibility. On a shared run we can establish which property it sits under before any work starts.

Can you repair a drain without digging up my drive?

Usually, yes. Drain relining forms a new lining inside the existing pipe through an access point, so most failed runs are repaired with no excavation. Where a pipe has fully collapsed no-dig technology will not work and we will tell you that rather than trying it.

My drain keeps blocking. Why does it come back?

Repeat blocked drains usually point at the pipe rather than at what went down it - tree roots, a displaced joint or a partial collapse. CCTV inspections show which, and once you know that you can fix the cause instead of paying to clear the same drain every few months.

What does drain unblocking in Heanor cost?

We give you a fixed price over the phone once we know what the job involves, and quoting costs nothing. There is no call out charge and the figure you are given is the figure you pay. Call 0115 990 2882 to book.
